Groups Eliminate Medical Debts for 24,000 Arkansans
Foundation: Arkansas Community Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation
Several organizations revealed Thursday morning that generous donors and organizations paid off almost 24,000 Arkansans' medical debts.
The $35.2 million award announced January 27, 2022 would aid 23,896 people in all 75 Arkansas counties, according to a press release.
According to Joanna Smith-Ramani, managing director of the Aspen Institute Financial Security Program, growing expenses of basic necessities including housing, education, childcare, and healthcare are driving up debt levels.
According to 2015 statistics from the Urban Institute, Arkansas has the second-most non-elderly individuals with past-due medical debt.
The town hall recommended debt avoidance rather than debt reduction.
